JV Boys' Basketball

Updated 1/2/07

We knew from the beginning that this game would be an uphill struggle.  Mohonasen was one of the most difficult teams last year and we were never able to beat them.  A victory in this game would most likely be determined by the team who wanted a victory the most and the team that was the most smart and strategic about how to win this game.  All that aside, Scotia played a hard fought game against Mohonasen, but we were not entirely smart about it.  We had huge difficulties on our man to man press, it seemed many times that Mohonasen would go up the court unopposed.  Also on defense, we had difficulty taking charges and keeping the ball handler to one side of the court by positioning ourselves so as not to let Mohonasen players from going toward the middle.  Mohonasen took many hard drives toward the middle of the court and were able to dish it off to one of their teammates because of our ineffective defense.  On the bright side, we were able to drive into the lane and then pass to an open teammate on offense.  This is something we have worked on all year long and were finally able to do in a real game.  This game was a hard loss and it demonstrates that we need to improve upon many things at this half way point in the season.

In the first game of the JV Kirvin Cup, Scotia was able to soundly beat Bishop Gibbons 66 to 10.  Part of the victory was made by Scotia's solid defense, which held Bishop Gibbons to 3 points in the first half.  On offense, Scotia looked for open shots and were able to pass the ball easily to open teammates who were ready to score.  Compared to most games where it was a struggle to succeed on the offensive end, in this game, scoring came easily.  We also realized that we should have good sportsmanship by not worrying too much about how the referees called the game because there was such a large difference between the two scores.  We were able keep up the good work on both ends of the court without it seeming like we were fooling around.  Our focus was on the game until the end.  We keep our composure were able to pull out a relatively easy win.

In this game versus Lansingburgh, we had similar problems to our previous game against Broadalbin-Perth.  The difference between this game and our previous one against Broadalbin was the fact that we played harder and the win   felt better than our slim victory against Broadalbin. What really hurt us in this game was the fact that we committed far too many turnovers.  We also had difficulty shooting longer range shots, something we have had difficulty with all year long.  This ended up being another close game, but in the end we were able to win it by only a small margin due to our hard work.

Although we won this game against Broadalbin-Perth, we could have done a much better job passing the ball. We played sloppy basketball and had many, many turnovers.  It seemed that we "telegraphed" the pass by not faking.  We also did not rip through properly to get a better view of the court to see our teammates who could have been wide open.  Also on offense, we had difficulty scoring off jump shots and it took much more effort to score.  Towards the end of the game, we were only up by a single point against Broadalbin when we committed a ill-advised foul with 1.3 seconds left on the clock.  Luckily, our opponent missed both free-throws, but we almost allowed them the win again when one of us did not box out our opponent and allowed them to get a shot off, which again did not go in.

Queensbury was our first away game of the season and it seemed every minute of it was hard fought.  We were able to keep playing our zone defense, resulting in Queensbury's difficulty scoring later in the game.  In fact, we were able to hold Queensbury to thirty-nine points, thirty-two of which were scored in the first half alone.  This game was extremely close and was only really decided in the last minutes of the fourth quarter.  It was surprising that we did not score more or do better on offense since we won over Queensbury by a considerable margin in two of our games last year.  Queensbury had many opportunities to score or win the game, but it was not able to, despite a few calls going their way.  This game exposed some of our faults as a team, especially on half court defense.  It seemed that the team was unable to set up a play and run it to its entirety. Many times we would take poor percentage shots from farther away instead of driving to the basket and dishing off or passing to a teammate.  On both the defensive and offense ends of the court we had difficulties rebounding.  It seemed some players could have done a better job boxing out on defense and then going after the ball.  On offense, our rebounding troubles were worsened by the fact that longer range shots tended to have longer range rebounds, making a rebounder's job harder.  We need to work hard on our offensive rebounding and offensive scoring most of all.  Even though improvements could be made in this game, we were able to win it by a small margin of points.  That just goes to show what hard work and determination on the court can achieve.

This game against Gloversville ended up in a win for Scotia-Glenville.  We won by in large by working hard and keeping the game at an up-tempo pace.  On offense, we had a relatively easy time tipping the ball out of our opponents hands and making a fast break toward our basket in order to score.  We still need work on preventing turnovers on our own offensive end though.  In this game alone we had about twenty-two turnovers, an unacceptable amount.  Our players, especially our guards need to know how to handle the ball and how to make good passes and even better pass fakes in order to keep the ball in our hands on offense and not the opponent's.  We also could of had many more points if we were able to execute our plays better.  We needed to have players who knew exactly what to do and where to go on the court.  Sometimes, our plays would break down due to poor execution and we would end up taking a tougher shot than what was needed, whether it was a long range jump shot, or a heavily guarded closer range shot.  We need to have every player on our team know our plays inside and out in order to succeed.  Another major weakness on offense during this game was our inability to score off of offensive rebounds.  Many times we would go up strong toward the hoop, but the ball would not end up in the rim.  To correct this, we might want to get a rebound, then gather our selves before jumping up toward the hoop.  This would help to make a more accurate shot, get the defense's hand's down and would make it easier for us to score more points.  All in all, we won this game somewhat more easily than our previous games.  This was only achieved through hard work and tenacity which we need to keep for the rest of the season to come.

The JV Tartans win their first Foothills game.

This game was our first Foothills Council win and it was one of our hardest fought games to date.  We still hope to make many improvements over the season, but based on this game these improvements should focus a little more on the offensive end.  The defense we played was fairly good.  Our 3-2 zone  helped to keep our opponents from driving to the lane undefended most of the time.  A majority of the other team's points were long range jump shots or breakaway lay-ups in which our players could not get back on defense fast enough.  At the offensive end, we had several times where we would shoot the ball, miss and get the rebound and go up again.  We had some trouble in making put-back lay-ups. We had however, not too much trouble getting offensive rebounds.  Our team did a better job passing more often to the post.  A larger proportion of our points came from relatively easy post moves compared to the long range shots we took in our Chittenango game.  Also our intensity during the game stayed high and our teammates tried to go after nearly every loose ball.  A fair amount of our points on offense were from defensive steals and the hard drives to the basket.  In the end, the win was hard fought, but we managed to get a "W" on the board.
